Suspension and brakes
Independent: Front - transverse link axle, coil spring and MacPherson strut with dual circuit discs on S/LS (drums US), drums on 1302
The new front suspension system. Elements of the suspension - both front and rear - were also utilized in the 1976 Porsche 924.
Some '71, and to a lesser extent '72, models were manufactured with torsion bar/ball joint front suspension for the North American and South African markets.

All US models - buzzer/ignition key warning, red side reflectors to rear tail light assembly, side marker lights and reflectors incorporated in enlarged turn signal/parking lights. Back-up lights made standard - 8.71
1970 on export models to US incorporated a Hella made reflector (VW part no. 113 945 103A) bolted on to the bumper bracket.

17.2.72 - Beetle number 15,007,034, a 1302 S, becomes a 'World Champion' and leaves the Wolfsburg assembly line to break the world production record previously held by the Model T Ford. Note 'Marathon' sports wheels ( see Special Editions ). Car now in Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen collection, Wolfsburg.
The basic 1302 front strut assembly design continued on into the '73 1303 models until 1974 when the steering knuckle and its mounting was revised. Rack and pinion steering was introduced for the 1975 models.
1302 production ends 7.72 - replaced with 1303 model 8.72
1303 production ends 7.75 - 1303 Convertible production continues until 1.80
