Si o scurta istorie Aro facuta bineinteles de strainezi.
Aro
ARO SA (short for Auto Romania) is an off-road vehicle manufacturer located near the town of Campulung Muscel, Romania. It started production in 1957. To date the company has manufactured over 360,000 vehicles, 2/3 of which were exported in some 110 countries (before 1989 about 90% of the ARO production was exported). The ARO 244 model was planned to enter the US market as the Cross Lander 244X but funding ran out in February of 2006.
The first model was the IMS-57; a total 914 vehicles were built between 1957 and 1959, mostly handcrafted. Among other oddities, the IMS-57 had manual windshield wipers.
In 1959 the IMS-57 was replaced by the M59, which was a substantial improvement over its predecessor. During the four years in production (1959-1963) the number of vehicles built jumped from 803 (1959) to 3222 (1963).
A new model, the M461, was started in 1964. More than 80,000 M461s were produced between 1964 and 1976, about half of which were exported. The M461 was a very good performer for its time, having won a few international competitions. Note that about 3000 M461s are still on the road in Romania. There are rumors that the company plans to revive the M461 in the near future.
The ARO 24 Series got a "little brother" in 1980, the ARO 10. While the ARO-24 can be classified as mid-size SUVs, the ARO 10 is about the size of a Jeep Wrangler. It is produced in six body trims, can be equipped with seven different engines (both gas and Diesel), and it comes in both 2x4 and 4x4 versions.
The first vehicle under the ARO badge was the ARO 240, a two door SUV, which entered production in 1972. This was the first model of the ARO 24 series, which eventually included many other models: the four doors 244, the 242 pick-up, the three doors 243, the 320 pick-up, and others.
Notable improvements over the years were the introduction of Diesel engines in 1984, units equipped with Toyota engines since 1996, and units equipped with Romanian built turbo Diesel engines since 1999. The ARO-24s are still in production.
In September 2003, the Romanian state sold, for a price of 180,000 USD, 68,7% of ARO to an American company called "Cross Lander", owned by John Perez. The contract said that the company had to invest 2 million USD in the company, but, allegedly, none of this investment was done and instead, the industrial equipment of ARO was sold off (according to the privatization contract, he was not allowed to do that).
