Impresionanta masinarie!
Maz 543 V12 38000cc
Jaw dropping. I spent a while thinking what comment to start with, and I came to the conclusion nothing could really describe one of biggest monsters of trucks ever made.
Driving one of these is an experience you are not going to forget quickly, to give you some idea, I will explain.
Due to the sheer size of the Maz it’s advisable to do a walk round check, this will take a while. Imagine yourself as a train driver and having to check your loco first. Next climb up into the cab, press the isolator (this takes both hands), switch controls for the pre-heater on, hold preheater plug on for a while until you here a ‘uff’, that’s the fuel igniting in the burner, then switch on charge fans. Now you have woken the giant, the burner is quite impressive, it needs to be. There’s about two hundred litres to warm up!
Next you wait, watching temperature gauges start to climb, when they reach fifty degree’s. Now you pump the pre-start fuel primer until you feel resistance. Then you turn the valve on the air bottles on, this will pre-charge the start system with eighteen bar of air. All backed up on the electric start solenoid, then turn pre-starter oil pump on and press, this will start to pull the oil from the sixty litre oil tank, and raise the crankshaft. You by this stage are in the final countdown. Wait and watch the oil gauge, gradually it will climb, 20, 40, 70 and so on. Move throttle in start position, and count to ten. A final check, and don’t do what I did the first time and bottle it. You’ve matched up to the top of the hill, and woken the beast, now there is no going back. You have to continue… The problem is I knew what to expect banging the air start, its right by the side of you.
Anyway, now you brace yourself if wearing no earplugs. Press the button marked ‘Air starter’. All you will first is a big ‘BANG’, like a shotgun as 180 psi of air is released instantly into the combustion chambers. With the governors in the full open position, you’ve booted the giant with your size 14 steel capped boots. With belches of black smoke out the eight inch exhaust pipes on both sides, the giant V12 38,000 cc quad valve, shaft driven camshafts, has burst into life on full throttle, but don’t panic, the governors will quickly steady the beast to a steady idle.
You have to remember this is no shopping trolley. Everything is massive, whether it’s the hub assemblies weighing half a ton each, or the brake chambers measuring 14 inches across. You have to think ahead, the automatic gearbox is the size of a small car. The strange thing is the Maz is so easy to drive, you have the ideal combination full powersteering, autobox, full power brakes. Now you have tamed the beast and it knows you are boss, he’s like a pussy cat so the fun can now begin, select position one and dab the throttle. Although be prepared whilst you might expect commotion from onlookers you might be more surprised than you think. My first trip into my local town brought everything to a stand still. Although I was concentrating on driving, I had to stop at the lights, right in the centre… Gradually I realised, nobody was walking anywhere, all eyes were looking at the beast, and then the phones appeared for pictures. Now I will stop the story, and will leave the rest to the new owner to discover.
