Schwimmwagen VW TYP 166 a fost proiectat de Ferdinand Porsche folosind componente de baza de Wolkswagen in anii '40. Pentru propulsia pe apa, elicea era coborita si antrenata prin intermediul unui carlig. Directia era pastrata prin intermediul rotilor din fata.Pentru suspensie erau prevazute bare de torsiune pe fata si spate,iar toata suprafata era etanseizata. A fost folosit de unitatile derecunoastere si legatura, fiind usor si foarte mobil, a fost destinat unitatilor de parasutisti fiind compact si usor de transportat, inclusiv pentru parasutare, foarte eficient pe frontul de est. Varianta 128 era echipata cu tambur pentru intinderea firelor pentru comunicatii.
